Granuflo and NaturaLyte contain both acetic acid and sodium acetate. The patient’s tissue and liver converts the sodium acetate into bicarbonate, which increases the bicarbonate levels beyond what had initially been prescribed. Using Granuflo without proper dosages is likely to end in cardiac arrest. Since the product manufacturers, Fresenius Medical Care had failed to warn anyone about this ongoing risk for injury, many have came forward to file a legal claim against them.
Granuflo is designed to help treat patients who have acute or chronic kidney failure. However, because of the mass amounts of alkalines that they found in multiple patients’ bloodstream, it is likely to lead to metabolic alkalosis as well as other serious side effects including:
- Low blood pressure (hypotension)
- Heart problems
- Cardiopulmonary arrest
- Irregular heartbeats
- Stroke
- Excessive amounts of carbon dioxide in the blood
- Low potassium in the bloodstream (hypokalemia)
- Death
