Most other acid concentrated products are primarily acetic acid; GranuFlo and NaturaLyte contain acetic acid but also contain sodium acetate. The sodium acetate is converted into bicarbonate by a patient’s liver, which will increase the bicarbonate levels, sometimes far beyond what was prescribed.
Many side effects have been reported when using Granuflo, including:
- Irregular heartbeats
- Cardiopulmonary arrest
- Excessive amounts of carbon dioxide in the blood
- Low potassium in the bloodstream
- Low blood pressure
- Heart attack
- Metabolic alkalosis
- Stroke
- Death
Since the product manufacturers, Fresnius Medical Care, did not warn of the increased risks for these side effects when using their product, many have came forward to file a legal claim against them.
