However both GranuFlo and NaturaLyte contain both acetic acid and sodium acetate. The patient’s tissues and liver convert the sodium acetate into bicarbonates. When these products are mixed incorrectly, there is a high risk of bicarbonate overdosing because the bicarbonate levels can exceed what had been prescribed.
GranuFlo was designed to help patients with chronic and acute kidney failure. Unfortunately, many side effects have been reported including:
- Irregular heartbeats
- Low blood pressure
- Cardiopulmonary arrest
- Excessive amounts of carbon dioxide found in the blood
- Low potassium in the bloodstream
- Stroke
- Metabolic alkalosis
- Death
