According to the FDA, who filed a class I recall on the drug in June 2012, it puts patients at a much higher risk for developing heart attacks.

In May 2012, the FDA first looked into the drug and warned doctors to monitor their dialysis patients very closely because GranuFlo was shown to contain more alkaline chemicals than most. GranuFlo was made to help treat patients who had chronic or acute kidney problems. Due to high amounts of alkaline that was found in the blood, it was recalled as it can lead to metabolic alkalosis, and many other serious side effects including:
- cardiac arrest
- low blood pressure
- irregular heartbeat
- hypercapnia (mass amounts of carbon dioxide in the bloodstream)
- fatality
